Defining features ---
Francis is rarely seen without his precious stubble which not only represents one of his country’s gorges (the Gorges du Tarn, to be specific), but he also thinks it makes him look more mature and big brotherly. He’s also accumulated a lot of scars from various wars and battles all over his body, most of which have faded with time.
Additional features ---
Francis has shoulder-length blond hair which he usually leaves loose unless he needs it to be out of the way. In those times he ties it back in a ponytail. He’s neither the tallest nor the shortest of nations, and is stronger than he looks. Whether he’s at work or at home he adds a touch of his own style to whatever he wears. At work he goes for a look that’s professional yet has a little bit of flashiness to it so he stands out among the crowd, and outside of work he likes to dress a little more casually.

Personality ---
As first impressions go, the one Francis tries to give to the world is the best one he can. He almost always greets people with a smile, and his fashion sense is sometimes on the unusual side but somehow it works for him. It’s certainly something the people he meets don’t forget in a hurry. Once they get past his appearance they find a man who is very warm and friendly, perhaps even charming.
He loves to make people feel good about themselves, and will do whatever he can to put a smile on people’s faces whether it’s as simple as giving them compliments or as complex as helping them sort out a problem that’s bothering or upsetting them. He’s a very good listener, and tries to give people good advice if they ask for it. He knows what it’s like to be on the receiving end of bad or unwanted advice, and he doesn’t want to upset people by doing that.
He also has a romantic side, and will do his best to treat whoever he’s interested in dating right, and do what he can to let them know they’re desirable and loved. Although he does have a tendency to play the field when he’s single, when he’s committed he’s committed. He may still flirt occasionally (nobody’s perfect), but his partner is the one he goes home with. He has no issues with other people finding his partner attractive because although other people may like his partner, he’s the one his partner goes home with.
He has a protective streak when it comes to anyone who’s living in his household, and will do his very best to look after them and their people. He feels like he’s at his best when he has people relying on him whether it’s young colonies looking for guidance to make their way in the world, or nations who are under his protection for the time being. Unfortunately his track record of keeping his colonies and protectorates is not the best, and it breaks his heart when they leave or are otherwise taken from him.
He also is very comfortable with his body, has no issue with showing it off, and doesn’t understand why other people disapprove of him removing his clothes. Beauty is something everyone should see, yes? He also finds being called a pervert or being accused of sexually harassing people upsetting because he considers himself the country of love, and love does not include hurting other people or making them feel uncomfortable or upset. He hasn’t quite made the mental connection between removing his clothes in public and harassment yet, but he’ll get there. Someday.
Although Francis is quite religious and believes God is watching over him he wonders sometimes if God is a trickster who’s out to make his life annoying and difficult. Whenever something goes wrong for him Francis has a tendency to explain it all away as God being mean or playing tricks on him rather than admitting he was at fault if he was partly or fully to blame for the situation. He also tends to over-react to a lot of situations including ones like this and behave like a complete drama queen. Whether his reactions are genuine or a possible ploy for attention remains yet to be seen.
Francis likes to stand out in the crowd and he firmly believes he’s the best-dressed person in that crowd. It makes him rather vain, but he doesn’t care if people think he’s vain. After all, not everyone can look this good! He also loves everything about his country to the point of being xenophobic. He firmly believes that France is the greatest country in the world, and that everything from there is just, well, better than anything your country can, has ever or will ever produce. He also refuses to speak any languages other than French, and will never admit that he’s picked up a fair bit of other languages. Especially English.
Francis is also very competitive and he loves to win. He has a lot of rivals on the sports field, and does his best to defeat all of them when they meet. And if he loses? Clearly God was off doing something else and wasn’t there to help him win.

Fears ---
- Being Forgotten: He finds this the most fearsome of all because if you’re forgotten how would people know you ever existed?
- Being Alone: He doesn’t like to admit it, but being on his own scares him. He finds the presence of another nation or human comforting even if the other person actually doesn’t like him.
- Germany: He knows it’s irrational but even though most of his fear regarding Germany in the past is gone he’s still a tiny bit nervous deep down inside when Germany’s around. He would never admit it though.
- Rejection.
- Running out of wine. He’s fairly certain it’ll never happen, but you never know what’s going to happen tomorrow…
Lesser known facts ---
Goals ---
- For French to replace English as the world’s international language for business.
- To share his culture with more of the world.
- To find somebody to love who isn’t scared of him or his (undeserved in his opinion) reputation.

Roleplay example ---
1772 – Marc- Joseph Marion du Fresne makes landfall in New Zealand.
“I hope this place is better than New Holland.” Francis said as land came into sight, and he heard a chuckle from Marc-Joseph. Granted the little island called Van Diemen’s Land was incredibly beautiful and there were indigenous people so New Holland was clearly inhabited despite what previous explorers had thought. He wasn’t as keen on the mainland because it seemed to be mainly desert as far as he could tell, and he had to admit he was a tiny bit nervous about visiting New Zealand. He had heard stories of powerful warriors when he mentioned to the Netherlands that he was going to see the two (so far) unclaimed island nations, and was warned to be careful when dealing with them.
“I have heard that New Zealand is even more beautiful than Van Diemen’s Land.” Marc-Joseph said. “And we will be arriving there soon.”
Francis hoped that he could meet the little nation the Netherlands and England had mentioned. From what he’d heard the child was as fearsome as his people, but he wanted to see that for himself. For all he knew the two of them might be lying so they can claim New Zealand for themselves! They were planning to stay in the north of the country to make repairs to their ships before moving on further into the South Pacific. Francis’s Empire wasn’t as big as England’s, but he was just as keen on claiming new lands for himself and spreading his language and culture throughout the world. He was certain his language and culture would be better received by his colonies than England’s. His food was better for a start.
Now he could see more of the land, and initially it seemed to be full of trees like Van Diemen’s Land. As they got closer and closer to the shore he could see a village of some sort in the distance. Finally Marc-Joseph decided their fleet was close enough to land to go ashore. As the rowboats landed on the beach, Francis could see a small warrior standing on the beach holding a spear. The warrior looked like a child, but he didn’t seem to be nervous or afraid of him and his men. He could see that the child had dark hair and green eyes, and he wondered if this child could be New Zealand.
“Greetings, strangers.” The child said, and tossed a small branch onto the ground in front of Francis before pointing a spear at him while he tried to look as intimidating as he could. In reality he looked rather cute instead of fearsome. “Are you friends or foes?”
“What did the kid say?” Francis heard one of the crew say. Now he was fairly certain this child was New Zealand since he understood him and his people did not. He found it interesting that no matter where he travelled the young nations he met all understood him and vice versa despite their languages being incredibly different.
“Bonjour, nouvelle-Zélande.” Francis picked up the small branch. “We are indeed friends.”
He watched as a warrior came up to them, and he hoped that his crew wouldn’t take this as a sign of trouble. He chatted for a moment with New Zealand before moving away again. New Zealand then lowered his spear and smiled.
“My name is Aotearoa. Welcome to my country.” New Zealand looked up at him, and he was still smiling. “And what is your name?”
“My name is Francis, and would it be all right for us to stay here while we repair our ships?” Francis said, and Aotearoa nodded. Francis relayed to the crew that everything was fine and that they could stay here, and then crouched down in front of Aotearoa. “Only their leader is aware that I’m a nation like you. I’m France, and I come from the other side of the world.”
“Like the man with the fuzzy insects on his face?” Aotearoa said, and Francis laughed. He had never heard England's eyebrows described that way before.
“Oui, just like him.” Francis said and noticed Aotearoa staring at his face. “Oh no, I don’t have eyebrows as big as his! We’re both from the other side of the world.”
“Is the other side of the world really far away?”
“It’s further away than you might be able to imagine right now.” Francis said, and saw a look of curiosity on Aotearoa’s face. He would have to show him a map later so he could see how big the world is, but for now he was certain that he and Aotearoa would get along just fine.
