Williams - Protector. Nation » Canada - also referred to as the Dominion of Canada. Aliases ↓ national nicknames Canada - obviously. Dominion of Canada ( Dominion du Canada) - not so commonly used, was scrapped after the Canada Act in 1982. The Canadas - used after the country split in two. Upper and Lower Canada - another name that was used when the split happened. The Province of Canada - occurred when Canada joined together again. Canadia - one of many slang terms sometimes used by Americans. personal nicknames Matt. Mattie. America - an entirely unintentional nickname, of course. Canuck/Canuckie. ...Who? Apparent Age » Nineteen. Actual age » Around 470+ years. Gender » Male. THE EXTERNAL everybody says the same thing to you Eye Color » This is debatable, but for the sake of the role-playing universe, I'm going to settle with lilac. Hair Color » Light brown - depends on lighting and artistic depiction. Height » 5'8" Weight » 182lbs. Skin Tone » Pale; reflects the arctic conditions of his country in winter. Defining Features ↓ Like everyone in the Hetalia universe, Matt has his fare share of scars; not so many that he's left being horrendously disfigured, but just enough so as to remind him that not even Canada has the cleanest of backgrounds. For instance, on the right side of his waist there is a long, somewhat crooked scratch that represents the fallout with Quebec, and covering nearly the whole left side of his chest is a hideous burn which forever marks the Hull-Ottawa fire of 1900 as well as the burning of his capital in 1812 (although, as time has passed, both of these scars have faded considerably). As for other bodily marks, there is one tattoo of a maple leaf that is nestled in between his shoulder blades. However, he can't quite remember how that got there... Additional Features ↓ In terms of physical appearance it's hard to say that Matt is particularly eye catching. He stands at the height of an average Canadian male and weighs roughly around 182lbs, although he is noticeably pudgier around the stomach and face (all those pancakes gotta go somewhere), giving him a somewhat smooth and rounded figure. Unfortunately, this doesn't really help him in anyway; it kinda makes him come off as being all cute 'n' cuddly rather then manly, which, in truth, is something he's been aiming after for a while now. He has been meaning to get around to a gym sometime (muscles are pretty much nonexistent) but his lazy personality always deters him... Like his brother, he too requires glasses, but whether they actually represent a Canadian province, or are simply there to help him see a little better, is unknown. Hair plays a surprisingly big factor in Matt's life - the unruly mop that sits on his head is near untameable, and try as he might, he can never flatten down that one curly strand which protrudes from his temple. And trust me, he's tried... and failed...many, many times. Alas, it seems that Matt has given up at attempting to sort out his honey brown locks, not even in the mornings will he bother brushing his hair, 'cause five minutes later it will nearly always revert back to being a floofy shamble. As a general rule of thumb, Matt prefers to dress casual in cloths he either purchased off of the internet or found in a charity shop, never anything too expensive, garish or colourful. His military uniform, however, is what he's most commonly seen in. It consists of a heavy white winter coat and brown cargo pants that are tucked into a pair of knee high leather boots, which are more often then not accompanied by some aviator goggles. THE INTERNAL its just a matter how you solve them Personality ↓ Well, where do we begin? Matthew is an unquestionably quiet, polite and shy young man, holding many of the traits his previous carers involuntarily exposed him to while also retaining some of the frivolity that has been brushed off from his brother. However, the demure aura that he emits is by no means a definite way of describing him, for at his core he is a determined and powerful country who could really achieve a lot if he put his mind to it. Unfortunately, when he does try to present himself in an assertive manner, he's more often then not predominated by his siblings much more noticeable temperament. Over time this has lead to him simply giving up trying to crawl out of his brothers shadow; it's obvious that Matt simply doesn't posses the will power to appear confident in front of others, not even his own family. He'd much rather put up with a person, lest he get into fight and lose them forever. Even so, we all have our limits, and Matthew is certainly no exception. In the event that his brother is being obnoxious to the point of him having a seizure, then yes. He might just snap a little, even if the eventual consequence of that is simply him shouting for a while (he would never lash out physically, not unless they were asking for it... or sports was involved). For the most part though it is agreed that Matthew is indeed overlooked in favor of Alfred, and as is to be expected, this can wear on his nerves. It's not the whole 'overshadowed' thing that makes him angry, it's when people mix him and his brother up does it start to tick him off. Upon correcting them though, he very rarely berates them with his troubles, instead ranting either to his aforementioned brother or Kumajiro afterwards (of course, it's not like either of them say anything helpful, he just talks to them as an outlet for his stress). Thankfully, Matthew has managed to adjust himself to being invisible, and while he doesn't accept it, he sure as hell puts up with it. What else can he do but be patient and wait for his allotted speaking time? The only downside of this rather... insecure take on things is that when he is approached, he's so inexperienced at communicating effectively that he can't help but stutter out his sentences and attempt to remove himself from the conversation... it's a vicious cycle, really. Like all countries, Matthew embodies the stereotypical views that come with being Canadian. He is decidedly placid, affable and extremely loyal - especially to family. And while these are all good, respectable traits to have, you can't have light without dark, can you? It was during WW I and II that Canada showed this specific 'side' of himself, and he did so unabashed of the thoughts of others. He'd seen war. He'd seen bodies. He'd seen enough. During this fateful time, Canadian soldiers infamously preformed acts against the Germans that left them running for cover. Moments like these still remain stuck in Matt's head, but he has never apologized for his, or his men's, behavior. Whether this is because Matt simply doesn't like remembering the violence that took place during that time period, or simply holds no remorse at all, is unknown; but there is no doubt in anyone's mind that deep, deep down, the shy, vulnerable Canadian youth harbors a dark, almost sadistic, disposition. This 'side', however, is no secret. It has been witnessed by many other leading military forces, and it's what helped Canada achieve respect within that prestigious group of people (even if they still don't notice him). Normally this side is kept under strict control, but it is glimpsed on the rare occasion Canada finds time to play a game of Hockey. What fuels this hidden anger is a varying mix of many different things; primarily it is the frustration he holds against both his brother and his perpetual invisibility, but it could also be linked to the fact that, like his twin, Matt has an extremely competitive spirit. He strives to win and get noticed by any means possible, even if that requires getting a maple leaf tattooed to his forehead... Veritable shyness and psychotic tendencies aside, it's Canada's undying allegiance to his allies which really makes him famous. Those who befriend him can be sure that they have someone to rely on - if something is wrong than Matt won't hesitate to trip over his own feet in order to calm the situation down. Because of this, Matt is generally well liked throughout the worlds leading countries, and is especially close with France, England and America (Cuba is left out for obvious reasons, even though their relationship is actually quite good). Due to this special affiliation, it's not unlike Matt to constantly be jumping to their defense in times of need. For example, it was only a week after England joined WW I did Canada sign up, and during the terrorist attacks made on America in 2000, Matt made no hesitations in running to his brothers aid. Nonetheless, if all this were to be stripped away, we'd still be left with the same person. Matthew Williams. As humble and as curious since the day he was born. Of course, it must be kept in mind that his 'birth' was a very long time ago, so it's inevitable that a lot of his personality has changed over the years. But how could it not? This is history we're talking about, lack of difference can only result in lack of development and growth, all of which is something a country needs to succeed. Matt, however, has achieved prosperity with flying colors. Yes, there has been turbulence over the years, but it's all payed off into a diverse and and vibrant ecosystem which constantly contributes its part in current world affairs. So what if he isn't noticed at the G8 meetings? He'll still happily sit through them anyways, Kumajiro clutched in his arms and an all knowing smile curled on his lips. Likes ↓ Fears ↓ |
• Losing Kumajiro - he's had the little polar bear for such a long time, it's only natural that he cares for him! Sure, he doesn't always remember his name (and vice versa) but Matt still holds a close connection with his fluffy friend.
• Somehow losing to/becoming part of America - he's had nightmares...
[/ul]
Lesser Known Facts ↓
(a quick example of that)
• In the period of time that France and England were caring for him, a lot of their traditions and habits rubbed off on him. For example, his polite personality (in contrast to his brothers, anyway) has almost certainly spanned from Arthur.
And the flirtatious, somewhat mysterious side of him...? Well, I think we all know where THAT came from.
• While he can't help but resent him a little, there is a side of Matt's heart that admires his brother. Naturally, when he questions himself about it (which he does a lot, I can assure you) he always denies himself and continues observing his sibling in a sort of 'love-hate' fashion. But, in truth, Matt wishes that he could share at least some traits with his smaller neighbor; not so many that he would lose all the traditions of Canada, but just enough so that maybe he could get noticed too...
• As is to be expected, English is not Matt's only language. Because he spent a considerable amount of time with France, it's only natural that he speaks French too.
• He has a tiny bit of a smoking habit.
[/ul]Goals ↓
• To at last get noticed/remembered by someone - you can't really blame him though can you?

THE PAST
and knowing how to change the things you've been through
1793 - The town of York was founded, later becoming Canada's largest city - Toronto.
1812 - One of the most memorable times in Matt's mind - the year his sibling made his only attempt at invasion. Canada, however, refused to fall and didn't go down without a fight. Eventually, Alfred was pushed back, but not before Canada's capital city was set alight, with Matt following after by doing the same thing to the White House. The war ended in 1814.
1837 - Upper and Lower Canada rebel - the upper province being lead by William Lyon Mackenzie. However, the skirmishes they made against the British government were not fruitful, and the rebellion was eventually crushed.
1840 - Upper and Lower Canada are united under the Act of Union, going by the name United Province of Canada. Delighted at the eventual turnout, Matt undergoes a sudden growing spurt and soon turns from a small child into a healthy teenager.
1850s - Hockey is introduced into Canada.
1858 - The British Columbian gold rush begins, and Canada is suddenly swarmed with hungry Brits and Americans alike.
1867 - The British North American Act is placed, making Matt an official country.
1873 - The original Royal Canadian Mounted Police are founded.
1914 - Canada sends troops to help Britain during WWI.
1917- A time in which Matt showed his true colors - The Battle at Vimy Ridge was fought by both Canada and Germany; Canada memorably unleashed a rather dark side of his personality, and eventually won against the opposing army.
1920 - Canada joins the League of Nations.
1929 – 1935 - The Great Depression hits Canada.
1939 - 1945 - WWII begins, and once again Canada is quick to join in shortly after Britain has. It is during this time that Canada fights with England and America by his side.
1960’s - The Quiet Revolution in Quebec occurs, with Quebec Nationalists showing their unrest with the government.
1965 - The nations famous maple leaf flag is introduced.
1968 - Pierre Elliott Trudeau becomes Canada's new president.
1970 - The October Crisis. Quebec's anger reaches an all time high - riots break out, bombs go off, vandalism ensues and the kidnappings are made. Matt is lost in the turmoil, and struggles to regain peacefulness in his country. Trudeau fails to calms Canada's nerves, but by December the whole thing is over, leaving a permanent mark in both Matt's and Trudeau's mind.
1976 - With Trudeau backing up him, Canada becomes an official member at G7. However, his membership was questioned, especially by America, who was far from trusting of Trudeau.
2000 - Trudeau dies at the age of 80.
2001 - While not directly affecting him, he was just as shaken as the rest of the world when 9/11 occurred, and did everything possible to defer his brothers planes and aid those in need. To him, it was a chilling reminder of the events that happened in 1985, when a plane carrying over 300 Canadian citizens blew up over the Atlantic Ocean, killing all inside.
2002 - Canada joins his brother fighting against Afghanistan.
2010 - Canada hosts the Winter Olympics.
2010 - Political storm over plan to change national census.
2011 - Conservatives win third consecutive term in government, and a parliamentary majority. The elections shake up the opposition, with the Liberal Party slipping into third place for the first time.

THE TRYOUT
i feel i've come to realize
The October Crisis.
1970.
A cacophony of explosions, screams and shouts rang into his ears, forever reminding him of the last few days. He wanted them to go away, to just leave him alone. But no. They were never happy, were they? Did they really hate him that much?
Silently, Matthew tore his eyes away from the screen in front of him, the pictures of chaos lighting up his face in the musty gloom of his house.
He was, or at leased tried, to be a good nation. He provided his people with rich culture, fruitful land and vast amounts of space for agricultural development and prosperity... he honestly hadn't expected the unrest amidst the Quebec Nationalists to escaltae to... to flat out terrorism. Was he seriously that naïve? Clicking the tongue against the roof his mouth, his fingers lazily danced through his ragged brown curls before being brought back down to his knees in a halfhearted attempt to take his mind of the subject. No, he wasn't naïve, not in this situation ... unprepared, maybe... A sigh escaped thin lips, and Matthew briefly allowed himself the pleasure of shutting his eyes.
For the first time in days he was utterly alone, with only the faint snoring's of Kumajiro and the yammer producing from the box in front of him for company. It was supposed to be a relaxation thing that Trudeau had organised for him - so far he'd nearly blown a blood vessel with all the stress he was forced to put up with. Unfortunately, being 'stuck' in his house had the exact opposite of the desired affect; Matt was more nervous then he'd been in a long while.
Was it his fault that things had turned out like this?
The question had popped up into his head many times, but not just on this singular occasion. Wars, arguments, deaths... he always somehow wound up blaming himself, even if he was never directly related. Probably had something to do with his personality... yeah, that was it.
The news channel continued to run on a loop, images of smoking buildings and disorderly riots filling up what little space was left in Matthews head - the newsreaders voice was deadly calm as they reeled the footage, yet he could quite literally feel the nervousness behind it. The whole of his country's fears were being poured into him, and he couldn't do a single thing but watch as his Boss struggled to fight against the threat... An oath was spat under the young mans breath, and at once the box was turned off, leaving him in near pitch darkness. God, he couldn't take any more of this... This wasn't Canada, this was madness.
For a long while he simply sat there, listening to the soothing sounds of the polar bear next to him, hands clenching and unclenching in a vain attempt to calm himself. He had so much faith in that man, that Trudeau. Had quite the sense of humor, too. A sly smile crept onto Matt's face when he thought back to the Ministers famous speech and the daring words he had spoken. No... he wasn't finished quite yet... He'd been around for hundreds of years and so far Canada had remained impervious to the few who wanted to claim his land.
Amethyst eyes gently slid open and seemed to glint slightly, even without a source of light. There was distrust, there was hate and anger... but there was always hope. And it was that which he gripped onto more tightly then ever before.
