History ---
- Britain first came to India with ideas of trade, so India allowed it. This was in 1617.
- Eventually Britain was trading so much with India that they were allowed to do more, so one hundred years later, in 1717, they were allowed free duty trades in Bengal.
- Bengal's people weren't very happy about this, so there was a "revolution" of sorts in 1757; however, they lost horribly to the East India Company.
- After another battle in 1764, Britain controlled all of Bengal.
- At around 1850, Britain continued to expand its rule of over all of India.
- In 1876-78 there was the first famine, in which about ten million Indians died.
- There was yet another famine in 1899-1900, in which about ten million more Indians died.
- Despite all the death, the population of India almost tripled by the 1940s.
- Around 1920, a leader Ghandi became quite popular in the revolution movement.
- Finally, in the 1940s, India was freed from England's rule.

Roleplay example ---
A bell tolled. It was near dawn, but not quite yet. The fear shined in all the eyes of Rani's fellow Hindu people, because they knew that somehow, somewhere, they were being watched. And yet, even with all their fear, Rani wondered why it was this way.
She was older than Britain, much older- truthfully, she was almost older than any other country in the world. So why was it, then, that she had to submit to such torture? It must be because they were weaker. Were Britain's forces really that much stronger than those of India? Indian people had so much more spirit, but they did not release it in the same way, through violence. Their spirit was all given to their religion, and in that, they were happy and content.
Rani was neither of these. She wanted, more than anything else, the freedom that she and her people deserved. Britain could not run any country but his own, as was obvious from the segregated way that he was attempting to run hers. And yet, he continued, which only upset Rani more. It wasn't fair, and it wouldn't be until they were freed.
"Asha," a small child called, referring to Rani by her middle name, her alias in these days. "Mother Asha," it called again, approaching Rani and tugging on the hem of her white cloak. The cloak was so significant of her soul, so pure, while the rest of her country was so dirty and bloody. If one thing must be kept clean, it would be her cloak, signifying the souls of all the good people in their country.
"What is it, my child?" Rani did not have any children; she was, in custom of religion, like the priestess of their slum, of their country. In this way she was like an English nun, in a sense, and as such, was addressed as "Mother", even by those older than her.
"Mother Asha, Lady Asha," the child cried, "We are all so hungry. When will we have food again?" At this, Rani fought the tears threatening to fall as she looked at the hunger and pain-driven child. So many were malnourished. For, it was the horrible time- the second famine, in the year 1899. The first had killed over ten million of her people, and this was no exception as it showed that the numbers could go higher. Rani's head turned downward toward the child, and she finally answered, as if deep in thought,
"I cannot say. I will try to get more food, I will, my child. I promise you will eat soon, even if I must give my ration to feed all of you. I will not let you die of hunger."
For she had seen so many die before, and die now. It was unfortunate, but it would end. Even if it would take another century, it would end. She could feel it in the bottom of her heart and soul. Her love for her country would provide what she needed in the end: Freedom.
So with a pat on the head, she sent the child off, though it had no parent to go to for it was an orphan of two people who had already come to pass in the famine. They would not be the last. As people died all around her, Rani stayed strong and hoped for the future of her country. For hope was all she had left.
