Incredibly pale with a slightly golden tinge to it.
Defining features ---
Despite the fact that Japan has been isolated for the majority of his life he has had his fair share of wars and scuffles. Obviously, his biggest scars are from Fat Man and Little Man. He has various slightly darker skin patches around his inner left thigh and lower right leg. For many years after they were dropped he had a slight limp because of the damage to his right leg although he has trained it out of himself as the radiation and damage was slowly fixed. He has very tiny scars along his left arm from ancient battles with Mongolia. Both of the Sino-Japanese wars have resulted in many relatively fresh scars along his chest and shoulder, not because they are recent enough but because they refuse to properly heal due to the continuing conflict with China. The Russo-Japanese war has left him with more damage to his back and chest and these once again are proving difficult to heal especially because of the Kuril Islands conflict.
Moving away from damage done to his body, he does have a very small rock tattooed on his upper left arm. Although it may seem like a silly thing to have (how could a rock possibly have any significance?) it is considered a very powerful symbol to his people and to himself. His national anthem even praises it saying that the Japanese nation will stand tall and proud through all weather completely impervious to damage. He received it in the Heian period as the samurai culture emerged.
Additional features ---
Unlike many of the more powerful countries around him, he is not visibly strong. Most of his strength resides in his arms and shoulders left over from his feudalistic days and thousands of years of farming and sword fighting. For the most part, his strength is in his grace and flexibility left over from times when war was an honorable and romanticized activity. Recently he has been attempting to gain more brute strength vs. the more tactful violence he is used to resulting in a slight muscles mass increase.
To the public eye he is always seen in either traditional military uniform decorated with ribbons, medals, heavy epaulettes, and a ceremonial sword or thick and impecably pressed suits. In his private quarters he prefers wool and silk kimonos depending on the season. He rarely wears them as during the American occupation of Japan he wore suits as a diplomatic effort to comply with the Western wishes. He considers the more cultural side of his country more private and so tries to appear as Westernized as possible.

Personality ---
At a first glance Japan would seem like a very simple and unintelligent person because of his quite attitude and tendency to agree with whatever anyone has to say. This extends from basic Japanese manners in which one appears humble and unintelligent to get what they want. It works very well as the listener is often fooled into thinking that they have actually gained from the agreements made. Manners are law for Japan and any bad manners on the part of anyone else are taken as a personal affront.
The interests of his people are always first in his mind even if it means breaking the trust of those he has the utmost respect and love for. This has caused many difficulties in the past and sometimes turned around and caused damage to those same people. His desire to become a recognized and powerful country over all of the other Asian countries led him to the Sino-Japanese Wars and desire to claim Korea and Taiwan. Often successful in his conquests, his people became blinded with the feelings that their nation was all powerful and could succeed at anything. This feeling lodged itself deep in Japan's heart. Recently he has come to doubt his abilities because of his brutal defeat during World War II.
Japan dislikes being disobeyed or tricked, he takes it as a blow to his honor and a personal insult. Countries acting this way towards him has often led to severe acts of violence that border on insanity. The combination of utter isolation and a sudden throw into the modern world has not necessarily made him mentally unstable, but very confused and vulnerable. Some of the decisions he has made have been based entirely off of the desire to wound others as deeply as possible for revenge and the pleasure he takes in seeing them weakened. Very rarely does he act like this as correct decorum and manners have been nailed so heavily into him. He wishes to suppress the violent intentions and resentful feelings he harbors. It is this bottling of feelings that can often lead to his bipolar like actions.
When Japan is not being unstable or overly polite, he is comparable to an old and wise shriveled up Japanese man. He takes pleasure in the quite and simplicity paired with beauty. He is very vain and is meticulous about his appearance even if it means using some Cover Girl or the Japanese equivalent, Kate. He has immense respect for those above him and for nature. Religion is still a strong force in his daily life, mainly Shintoism and Buddhism.
Even farther underneath his calm exterior is the willful teenager and little boy within him. He loves festivals and drinking with his friends and relatives he still gets along with. He rarely cuts loose and enjoys himself for fear of getting hurt. He judges himself harshly when he looks back on times when he has cut loose and enjoyed himself, especially when there were drugs or alcohol involved. He has a fear that he could end up like China during the Opium Wars with a huge portion of his population not in their sober minds.
Japan is extremely creative and clever with his hands. He is also highly intelligent and has recieved high levels of education. His culture revolves around those who are able to make something out of themselves and he strives to make himself that something out of himself better every day. He looks up to various countries for their military feats or their intelligence and will often imitate them in an effort to advance himself. In all of these creative and intelligent aspects he is extremely disciplined and will often slow himself down before he gets ahead of himself.
As far as feelings of affection go, he tries to stay away from it as much as possible. Too many times in the past has he grown fond of a certain country and had them either taken away from him or the trust between them completely shattered. Love is incredibly difficult for him to produce as well as he fears for its destructive qualities when it ends. This is not to say he is not faithful or caring, he is the pillar of both. It is generally his partner that will falter and he will take the blame upon himself. All of this plus his extremely conservative nature adds up to a very uptight lover.

They break all Sino-Korean agreements and gain the right to dispel all Chinese troops from Seoul. A pro-Japanese government is established.
• 1898 -- Boxer RebellionChina wishes to remain a strictly Asian country with little to no Western influence. It results in brief fights against foreign missionaries. Urged by the Boxers, Empress Dowager Cixi declares war against foreign powers. An eight-nation alliance was formed to fight back. It consisted of (in order of contribution), Japan, Russia, England, France, America, Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. This was the first war in which trench tactics were used and more advanced weaponry was used. • 1905 -- Japan comes to the peak of its military authority.
• 1914 -- World War IJapan entered this war on England's side because of the Anglo-Japanese alliance. Japan mainly fights as a naval force along the German coast. During this war, Hitler was beginning to hatch his ideas for the German Nationalist Party. He was extremely impressed by the Japanese form of propaganda and fighting style.
• 1929 -- The Great Depression hits Japan with an 8% economy shrinkage. Japan quickly jumps back.
• 1937 -- Second Sino-Japanese WarIn 1915, Japan made the Twenty-One Demands, a list of demands that would bring China further under Japan's influence. After World War I, Japan acquired the German range of influence over China. In 1931, Japan invaded Manchuria to acquire the miles of raw materials there. 1932 brought a brief war between China and Japan over this invasion. In 1933 Japan attacked China along its Great Wall region. 1937 brought forth the full scale war between both countries. Shanghai proved an easy victory for Japan and led to the capture of Nanking. During the six-week period that this city was captured, the Nanking Massacre occured. 20,000-80,000 women and children were raped and murdered by the Imperial Army. A safety zone was established by Westerners who had stayed in Nanking. It was 3.4 miles and centered around the American embassy. John Rabe, a member of the German Nazi Party, became leader of this zone and saved nearly 20,000-50,000 lives. In 1938, Japanese troops began to weaken with Chinese troops refusing to withdraw. The Japanese launched the first full-scale air and naval attack system against the major cities of China. By 1940 Japan was having a difficult time keeping control of the areas they had captured. From 1938-1941 the Chinese army attempted to drag out the war as long as possible hoping that the Japanese army would eventually have all of their resources exhausted. Although Germany did assist China, they withdrew support in 1938 as the hoped to ally with Japan against Russia. The Russians entered the war as an excuse to hinder the Japanese from invading Siberia. The Western Allies entered the war after the American public's opinion quickly swung against Japan because of the Nanking Massacre. The war ended in 1945 with an extremely confused Japanese public. They lost faith in their contries ability to fight as they had gone from winning every battle they entered to a humiliating defeat against a country they had already won against once before.
• World War IIIn 1939 Germany and Japan signed the Anti-Comintern Pact, a document into which Italy would shortly join that stated how all three countries would seek to destroy Communism. At the time, Japan had control of Mongolia and was slowly pushing its border farther into Russian territory. In 1939, Russia signed a non-aggression pact with Japan. During this time, Japan attempted to capture the Chinese city of Changsha. In 1940 as the rest of the Axis powers began pressing borders, Japan continued to blockade China. America embargoed several materials that Japan could use to make weapons. In 1940 the Tripartite Pact sealed the alliance between Japan, Germany, and Italy. In 1940, Japan took control of southern Indochina in response to a potential Western threat. In captured areas, The Three Alls was issued, a series of rules that oppressed all communists under Japanese rule. Success by the German army encouraged Japan to pressure some European governments resulting in the Dutch agreeing to supply Japan with oil in exchange for Japan not taking control of the Dutch Indochinese colonies. France on the other hand handed the colonies over. England and America responded to this by freezing all Japanese assests in the West. Japan had to chose between ending all ambitions in Asia or take control of more oil supplies by force. The Japanese decided to quickly cease as many English and American colonies as possible, resulting in the attack on Pearl Harbor. This led to a formal declaration of war on Japan by the majority of the Allies. By the end of 1942, Japan and Thailand had conquered almost all of Burma, Malaya, the Dutch East Indies, Singapore, and Rabaul resulting in severe troop losses for the allies. Although these victories were an easy win for Japan, it left may troops overdrawn. Japan proceeded to attempt to draw American naval forces into battle. Unfortunately, American leaders had already discovered the traps Japan planned to lead them into and avoided the conflict altogether. Guadalcanal then became an island of interest for Japan. Although they did capture it, they were quickly defeated and forced off the island again. Concern by the West of Japanese bases on Madgascar cause England to invade in 1942. In 1943, Allied troops began banding against Japan in the Pacific. A pact was drawn up by Western forces to return all territory to Japan that was originally theirs. Russia declared war on Japan two months after this decision ending all of those plans. Japan was forced to enter a lengthy and costly battle with China. Japan attempted to claim English colonies in India but were swiftly driven back. The Allies finally began relieving China of the constant attacks by Japan. Japan was driven back both on the Chinese permiter but also in the Pacific. This was followed by a heavy air force bombing campaign against heavily populated Japanese cities. Japan was driven out of Burma and pushed by even farther by American troops. The Allies called for an unconditional surrender by Japan. Japan refused resulting in the dropping of Fat Man and Little Man on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. America then invaded and occupied Japan and its government. Japan was given a temporary democratic government. The Kuril Islands were annexed by Russia and most of Korea also given to Russia. Although most of the world was in economic ruin, Japan went through an economic boom.
• 1995 -- The Great Hanshin Earthquake strikes Japan.

Roleplay example ---
593 A.D.
Japan lay with his arms at rest next to his icy cold body. With great effort he placed his hands on top of the thick blanket, palms up. Each movement caused a sharp ache in his joints and his face was twisted in an unfortunate grimace. He closed his eyes and took two deep calming breaths. He could feel them rattle down his throat and sit in the center of his lungs, unwilling to travel to his heart. Pushing his tongue forcefully against the roof of his mouth he willed himself not to cry. He could not bear the knowledge that in just a couple of minutes a servant would burst through the door disrupting the quite of his simple room and talk in urgent tones. Two more deep breaths. These traveled slowly to his heart but Japan still felt dead inside.
Just as predicted, the sliding rice paper door was hastily dragged open and a servant quickly bowed. Japan opened his eyes and rolled his head in the direction of the door.
"Yes?" It was really pointless to ask what the matter was. He knew what had happened, he felt it through every vein in his body.
"Emperor Sushun has died. You are asked to please come to his chambers." Japan rolled his head back to the ceiling and licked his dry lips.
"Of course. I will dress myself." The servant gave another hasty bow and scurried down the corridor. Sitting upright, Japan placed a cool palm over his eyes. He caught the hot tear that spilled from them and watched as the tear rolled around his smooth hand and slowly dried. And he breathed. As long as he could breathe.
But a month later a new emperor was crowned. Japan did not know if he could possibly appreciate or respect this one. It was Empress Suiko, a woman, a vessel for birth and a trickster. How could he possibly come to love one who was so different? She was pale as the moon and her eyes stayed lowered as all of the court bowed to her. He bowed resentfully. An alien in his court, it was his land and he could not tolerate such an atrocity in his Imperial Palace. Emperor Sushun had sat in that throne, that holy throne. But he touched his nose down to the floor in respect for her and breathed.
Later that day he was ushered into her rooms. He had been excited the last time this had happened. This time he was only filled with a sick feeling. Gritting his teeth together he bowed to the Empress and then straightened himself, toying with the clasp on his fan. The Empress tilted her head to the side and blinked slow tired blinks.
"Why have they brought you here?" Her voice was beautiful, silky and soft and full of power.
"You are to be told of a national secret." She raised a hand so full of grace and beauty to cover her mouth, and she giggled. A sweet tinkling giggle like the first stirrings of a Tibetan tea bowl.
"Then please, I desire to know this secret." Japan bowed once again, still resentful, still scared. He shuffled forward, his toes the only thing leaving the ground. He stopped in front of her throne and bowed again. Her feet were tiny and tucked so delicately beneath her robe. They were like two tiny chrysanthemums that floated gently in a still pool. He straightened himself and tried to hold back the tiniest smile.
"Great Empress, I am the Imperial Country of the Rising Sun." Her eyes stretched wide, each separate lash hanging over her pupil. She was frightening, so gentle and beautiful and yet full of such strength. For the first time since entering the room, Japan allowed himself to breath.
