This needs some working, but I provided this as a way for people to.. share their head canons... and perhaps bring it to the forum! Will edit as I think things through a bit more.
Formation: What's with all his separate states?
I do not know if you guys read my profile because it’s pretty much the length of a full marathon and then some. The fandom has gone with the author’s note that he had thought about giving Antonio a sister named Castilla, which is a province of Spain. Thus, Antonio would actually be Reino de Aragón and at the wedding of King Ferdinand of Aragón and Isabella of Castilla, Castilla disappears and Antonio becomes the embodiment of the whole Reino de España. However, the idea seems to have been abandoned (Spain is not quite a major character in Hetalia).
I like throwing stuff out the window if I think there may be something just as attractive. In my case, due to the fact that Castillan Spanish dominates the country now, I have a tendency to treat Antonio like he was the Kingdom of Castilla, though his entire being is actually the entire country, even though each state has its own personality. This is because of the fact that he was found by Ferdinand of Léon y Castilla... and because Castilla was possibly one of the most powerful provinces of Spain during the time.
However, I have a tendency to like to think of Spain as Hispania and an infant during the rule of Ancient Rome that grows as the Visigoth Kingdom rises in the region since the beginnings of the people existed before the 1400s. Antonio then falls under the influence of the Moors, gaining the knowledge of ancient Greek text that circulates as the Muslims translate the text and spread it all over their empire. Then as he grows up, he sees the effects of conquest, thus planting the beginnings of his Conquistador persona, though he is not aware of it at this point.
Then during one of the battles, the Moors actually take him to the battlefield and he witnesses the carnage, receiving a bit of a shock because he never quite knew what war was like (The Moors have been wanting to keep al-Adalaus innocent a little longer) and flees. And runs into Ferdinand of Léon y Castilla, who assumes that he is a child who lost his parents, adopting him. He gets passed on, royalty keeps explaining to people that he is the son of some dead dude and “send him away” for some time. I personally like to think that Antonio started out as Castilla himself, which I believe is considered the kingdom that swallowed up some other provinces and could be seen as the first coherent collection of states that came to be known as Spain.
