•Vodka
•Sunflowers
•Ballet—one of the few forms of dance he enjoys watching, and god help whoever laughs at him for it
•Chess—it is a calming game with an unrelenting intensity. Many grandmasters and world chess champions came from him, after all.
•the spring
•the French culture/language—during the Enlightenment and under the personal influence of Catherine the Great. Also during periods of amiable relations with France. Also, Voltaire and the Enlightenment. He also sees France as the epitome of all that is European, which serves to promote more admiration towards France.
•Byzantine culture (especially the architecture).
•his sisters
•Borscht (soup of Ukrainian origin)
•France
•Russian literature (Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, etc.)
•Items of western decadence
Dislikes ---
•Being alone
•Being invaded
•Obnoxious/loud people
•Neglectful bosses
•Some of the former USSR states
•Belarus coming over to his house at five o clock in the morning to watch him sleep
•When the western world considers him ‘barbaric’ and ‘backwards’
•Seeing his citizens harmed. Nothing stabs him in the heart as hard, especially if he's powerless to help it.
•When people mistrust his intentions. He means well. He really does.
•The winter
•
Fears ---
•Change. It seemed that few were positive in the last century. Even the dissolution of the Soviet Union has brought him loneliness…and heavy inflation that he battled with.
•Losing the few close friends he has left
•Being rejected by Europe entirely. He doesn’t know what he’d be without his European identity.
•Of America finding out about his
Lesser known facts ---
•He used to be incredibly superstitious, and still is to some extent. He still knocks on wood occasionally, and used to get incredibly agitated whenever someone stepped on his foot. As a child, he would chase away birds that landed on his windowsill, and purposely tripped on his left foot the night before a battle. He claims not to believe in such things anymore, but still finds himself avoiding women with empty water buckets. It’s best not to point this out, though.
•He wants to be more European. He truly does.

History ---
This is to remain a work in progress until my application deadline. This is so I can constantly update this timeline
862—Viking Rurik comes to Russia and founds the first Russian dynasty in Novgorod
980—Vladimir I, an exiled ruler of Novgorod, arrives at Kiev with Varangians (Scandinavians) and crowns himself as the grand prince of Kievian Russia
988— Vladmir converts to Orthodox Christianity as an attempt to use religion to unify his kingdom. He was motivated by the splendor of the Byzantines.
1223— First Mongol-Kiev conflict in eastern Russia. Russo-Turk army is defeated by the Mongols, who were very good at winter campaigns and avoided the muddy disadvantage that spring would bring.
1240—Kiev is destroyed by the Mongols, Russia is divided into several small dukedoms. The Mongols used Russian princes to collect taxes and census
1252—Alexander Nevsky, an important advocate for cooperation with the Mongols, becomes the Grand Prince of Vladmir.
1300s—Moscow surpasses Kiev in terms of political, cultural, and economic importance, as Moscow (and Novgorod) was favored by the Mongols for their cooperation with their invaders. Nevsky was more amiable towards the Mongols, as he recognized fighting them was futile and the Catholic Church was a threat to Russia’s national identity.
1400s—Ivan III (Ivan the Great) throws off the domination of the Mongols and establishes himself as the first Russian ruler of Russia (Moscow), as the previous rulers of Russia were foreigners.
1486—Ivan III begins his conquests to reunite Russia with the territories of modern-day Belarus and Ukraine
Teenage years
1547—Ivan IV (Ivan the Terrible) is crowned as the first tsar and is known as the first ruler of a unified Russian state. He reduced the power of the boyars and the Russian princes.
1560—St. Basil’s Cathedral is built under Ivan IV to mark the capture of Kazan from the Mongols in 1552
September 10, 1721—the Treaty of Nystad is signed, ending the Great Northern War and Sweden’s supremacy. Russia cedes Finland to Russia, but gains territories bordering the Baltic Sea. Russia’s victory establishes Russian supremacy in east Europe and he becomes an empire.
Adult years
January 25, 1775— Empress Elizabeth decrees the creation of Moscow University. The date is celebrated as Students’ Day
July 1807—Treaty of Tilsit is signed between Napoleon and Alexander I, ending the war between the French and Russian empires and the fourth coalition, under the condition that Russia would join the Continental System and cease trade with England. Russia wasn’t very happy with this, but the threat of French invasion pushed this decision.
October 26, 1806—Tsar Alexander declares war on the UK, but makes little effort towards military action, as it was simply to close off trade to the British.
September 14, 1812—the Fire of Moscow burns roughly 70% of the city before Napoleon’s Grand Armee arrives into the city. Most of the citizens were evacuated, and the cause is attributed to a number of sources, including Russian sabotage
